Carotenoids and carotenoid-rich foods in human health
Review article covering mechanistic and epidemiological evidence for carotenoid intake and photo-protective endpoints.
The vitamin that keeps skin cells cycling through properly — think turnover, texture, the glow that shows up when your skin is actually doing its job.
Why it's in Glowbite
* These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA.
Mechanism
Dietary beta carotene is cleaved by the BCO1 enzyme into retinal and then retinol, which binds to retinoic acid receptors to regulate epidermal differentiation. Because the conversion is regulated, beta carotene doesn't cause hypervitaminosis-A in the way preformed retinol can.*
Why this dose
8000 mcg RAE via beta carotene is within the range used in commercial skin-focused supplements. Unlike preformed retinol, beta carotene has no established UL from dietary sources; however, smokers and heavy drinkers should speak with their doctor before supplementing any beta carotene.
Representative studies
Review article covering mechanistic and epidemiological evidence for carotenoid intake and photo-protective endpoints.
Classic mechanistic paper describing the antioxidant activity of beta carotene and related pigments in biological membranes.
Interactions & cautions
Not recommended during pregnancy in high doses; beta carotene is generally preferable to retinol but check with your OB. Current smokers should speak with their doctor — some high-dose beta carotene trials in heavy-smoker cohorts raised safety concerns.
